Cavtat Croatia – visitor information

The settlement of Cavtat was once a Greek colony Epidaurum, which later became an important Roman colony of Epidaurus, which after the arrival of the Slavic people in the year 614 began to receive the outlines it has today. Duke Radoslav Pavlović sold the settlement in the year 1426 to the Republic of Dubrovnik, by which Cavtat becomes the second centre of the republic and gets an important role. The legend of the origin of the name Cavtat (derived from CIVITUS Vetus) is associated with beautiful Cavtislava, the only daughter of an Epidaurian king Kodrun and queen Amruža. The king decreed that the hand of the princess will be given to one that is the fastest in building an external city fortification, a great temple in the city, plumbing or brings to the city a ship full of silk. A rich man from Konavle nobleman Vrsanin first brought water into the city and at its opening, Cavtislava was to be the first one to drink the water from this aqueduct. Legend has it that a lizard jumped out of the aqueduct, and the fear gave Cavtislava a heart attack. As a memento to this beautiful girl, after the great earthquake of 1667., New Cavtat was built on the ruins of the old one. Another legend says that the town got its name from the ancient Croatian word "captiti" or blossom. For this a coastal plant Žuka is responsible, plant that was sung in a verse " Tamo dolje nešto se zlatom kiti i capti u grebenu” („Down there something adorns itself in gold and blossoms in the reef”).

Cavtat is the administrative center of the municipality Konavle, an area in the far south of Croatia. Located on the peninsula Rat, which together with the peninsula Sustjepan creates a beautiful bay. On one hand, clear waters and beautiful beaches on the other side of the rocky hill Konave, create an unforgettable image that you will cherish forever. Cavtat is only 19 kilometres southeast from Dubrovnik, in the vicinity of the airport (5 kilometres). This gives you an opportunity to spend a quiet holiday in one of the hotels or private houses, villas, apartments or rooms and still be in the vicinity of Dubrovnik. To visit Dubrovnik, you can use regular buses that connect the two cities. Since Cavtat, one of the most southern Croatian cities is economically linked to tourism; it offers a wide range of accommodation. You will also find a great selection of restaurants, bars, gift shops, and a port for small yachts and pleasure boats. Cavtat offers the possibility of a peaceful rest where you can enjoy the beautiful beaches with a range of sporting and entertainment contents. For the adventurous ones the underwater world of Cavtat is extremely attractive for divers because here there are several ancient amphora localities, the largest on the Adriatic and among the largest in the Mediterranean. You can explore the surroundings of Cavtat on bicycles through one of the bike routes, or simply take a stroll through some of the hiking trails. To raise the adrenaline we recommend climbing on cliffs above settlements of Mihanići and Pridvorje, with the help of a professional instructor. Cavtat is located above the lookout "peregrine falcon" Sivi soko, providing a priceless view.
