The old settlement Molina was named after the mills that were once driven by the Zavrelja creek, that still runs through Mlina and into the beautiful clear sea. In one of the old entries about Mlini, the following is written: At the end of this valley, called Parish, some French, who came here with his ship and whose name is not known, noticed that not far from the the coast, from the karst stone hills springs fresh water and soon decided to build a few large mills for grinding grain. After only half of mile, water from this spring flows into the sea. Only one of the old mills remained preserved till today. River Zavrelja is a source of fresh water, therefore this settlements known for its mills, once provided Dubrovnik, during the summer droughts with fresh water. Mlini is rich in monuments and legends. The most famous legend is that of Saint Hilarion (Ilar), who fought against a dragon, and after defeating it, burnt it and so saved Epidaurum (Cavtat today) from the invasion of the barbarians and destruction. To hounour him, the residents of Mlina built a church of St. Ilar (Sancti Hylacrioni), who became the patron of the settlement. There is an inscription at the church bell saying: “I hereby note to the people of St. Ilari that you have defeated a dragon of paganism here. MCMXXV.”The church was several times demolished, but reconstructed in 1683 in the building style of the Baroque era. Along with this church, we recommend to visit the Chapel of St. Roch, located on the beach, in the shade of the pine trees. It was built in the 15th century in hounour of St. Roch, a protector from the plague, and renovated in the 19th century.
Mlini is surrounded by authentic Mediterranean gardens, where olives, oleander, lavender, sage and bay leaf grow. In the shade of pine, cypress and pine trees, you will find your own place for a relaxation or for a walk, and the perfect image to remember this place by, will be complemented by some of the beautiful beaches with clear and clean sea.
You can find accommodation in hotels or private houses, villas, apartments or rooms. Mlini, a settlement situated in Župa (Parish) cove, is located halfway between Dubrovnik and Cavtat, 11 kilometers from each and can be visited by frequent coach lines. Since it is near Dubrovnik and the airport (13 kilometers), but far enough from the everyday noise, it is a guarantee that you will spend a great vacation staying in some of the offered accommodation. We certainly recommend this place to families with children.
